SUMMARY:A Walk in Penn's Woods
DESCRIPTION:As part of the statewide Walk in Penn’s Woods offerings\, FSF invites you to take a walk with us at FSF’s new Sparta Sportsmen’s Community Forest in Spartansburg\, PA. \n\n\n\nSparta Sportsmen’s Community Forest features an exceptional stand of sugar maple that has served as a sugar bush for several decades. Over a quarter mile of headwater tributaries flow through the property before joining nearby Patrick Run in the East Branch Oil Creek watershed. \n\n\n\nIn 2024\, the forest was purchased from Sparta Sportsmen’s Club\, which had owned the property since the early 1960s. The project was made possible by the PA DCNR Community Conservation Partnership Program via the Keystone Fund\, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy\, Commissioners of Crawford County\, Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds\, Crawford Heritage Community Foundation\, and Crawford County Sportsmen’s Council. Troy Firth\, FSF Founder and President\, donated additional forestland in Crawford and Venango Counties for conservation purposes in support of this project. \n\n\n\nThe property features an access drive that that we will walk as an approx. one mile loop trail. The walk will be on relatively flat\, but occasionally uneven\, terrain. Please dress for the weather\, brambles\, and possibly soggy ground. Blaze orange clothing is recommended as the property is open to the public for hunting. Bring a water bottle if you can\, but water bottles and snacks will be provided\, too. \n\n\n\nWe will meet at the driveway off of Old Route 77. See the Google Maps link below for directions. \n\n\n\nFor any questions\, please contact Annie Maloney at 814-694-5830 or info@foundationforsustainableforests.org

More than 50 years later\, this forest is a combination of a favorable land use history and the result of Troy’s careful management. It serves as an example of the long term benefits of “worst first” forestry. Join Troy for a walk to learn about the property’s history and see firsthand the various sustainable forestry practices that have been used to encourage ecosystem health and resilience. \n\n\n\nPlease note: This woods walk is a “double session” that will fill both morning breakout session time periods. If you would like to start with this woods walk\, but attend a different session during the second morning time slot\, and FSF representative will be available to guide you back to the main conference area ahead of morning session two. \n\n\n \n\n\n \n Horse Logging Demonstration: The Role of Horses in Sustainable Forestry (Pat Maloney\, Lester Byler\, & David Byler) \n \n \n \n\nThe careful felling of trees and the use of horses to skid logs out of the woods are cornerstones of FSF’s sustainable forestry approach. Join Pat\, one of FSF’s Directors and former horse logger\, and the draft horse teams of Lester Byler and David Byler for a demonstration and discussion of this process and the nuances that help to minimize residual damage to the forest during a harvest. \n\n\n \n\n\n \n Stream Survey of McLaughlin Run & Ways to Protect Stream Health During a Harvest (Watershed Conservation Research Center) \n \n \n \n\nMcLaughlin Run\, which winds through this forest\, provides a unique opportunity to examine the effects of forest management decisions on stream health. The southern half of the property\, which has been owned by Troy Firth since 1972\, retains helmocks along the creek\, while the northern half of the property\, acquired by Troy in 2012\, had its hemlocks removed under prior ownership. Join the Watershed Conservation Research Center in surveying McLaughlin Run in these two stretches\, comparing the results\, and discussing practices to protect stream health during and after a harvest. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n10:45 AM – Break \n\n\n\n11:00 AM – Morning Breakout Session 2 \n\n\n\n\n \n Legacy & Estate Planning for Woodland Owners (Thomas Hoffman\, II\, Esq.) \n \n \n \n\nThis session is an introduction to estate planning and the need for woodland owners to plan for the future of their land and resources. Includes a Federal and Pennsylvania inheritance tax primer\, discussion of using limited partnerships and limited liability companies\, and discussion of multi-generational and lifetime forest land planning using trusts. \n\n\n \n\n\n \n Continued from Session 1: Woods Walk – Land Use History & Management at McLaughlin Run (Troy Firth) \n \n \n \n \n\n\n \n Horse Logging Demonstration: The Role of Horses in Sustainable Forestry (Pat Maloney\, Lester Byler\, & David Byler) \n \n \n \n\nThe careful felling of trees and the use of horses to skid logs out of the woods are cornerstones of FSF’s sustainable forestry approach. In addition to Ethan’s engaging presentation\, the evening will feature a Chance Auction with great prizes! \n\n\n\nThis year’s dinner will be held at the historic Titusville Mill in Titusville\, PA. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event has passed. \n\n\n\nThank you for your interest! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $45 per person and include a buffet dinner\, dessert\, the keynote presentation\, and entries in the Chance Auction. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKeynote Presentation by Ethan Tapper\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to love a forest? In this talk\, Ethan Tapper\, a forester\, author and content creator from Vermont\, will draw from his work as a forester and his bestselling book — How to Love a Forest: The Bittersweet Work of Tending a Changing World — to discuss what it means to care for forests and other ecosystems at this moment in time. How do we respond to the harmful legacies of the past? How do we use our species’ incredible power to heal rather than to harm? How do we reach towards a better future? In a time in which many believe that “protecting” ecosystems means protecting them from ourselves\, Ethan argues that humans must take action to help ecosystems heal and to move into a more abundant future. Ethan’s message is at once compassionate and pragmatic\, clear-eyed and hopeful\, sobering and inspiring\, a powerful new idea for how we can build a world that works for all of its ecosystems and all of its people. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEthan Tapper is a Vermont-based forester\, digital creator\, and the bestselling author of How to Love a Forest: The Bittersweet Work of Tending a Changing World. Forest legacy planning allows current owners to create structures and processes to allow for seamless transition of the land\, as well as the stewardship ethic. In this session\, the Finley Center for Private Forests’ Paul Roth will discuss the steps to take to get to forest legacy planning\, and walk you through the planning process\, common conservation models for your land\, tips for navigating potentially difficult conversations with family\, professionals to assist\, and best practices to ensure it goes smoothly. \n\n\n \n\n\n \n Hemlock Woolly Adelgid is Here: Panel Discussion (Jim Altemus\, Tim Palmer\, Kelly Culbertson\, and others) \n \n \n \n\nFor many years\, Crawford County had been the state’s only holdout from hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)\, but the pest was discovered in the County in late 2023. Hemlocks are a keystone species of critical importance to forest and cold-water stream ecosystems and this disease has the potential to shape our forests more significantly than any other tree pest in the past century. DCNR Forest Health Program Specialist Jim Aletmus will begin this session with an overview presentation about HWA’s ecology\, spread\, impact\, and treatment options. Following the presentation\, Jim will join a collection of panelists representing different areas of HWA expertise for a discussion and audience Q&A around management approaches\, landscape changes\, and adaptation in light of HWA. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n12:15 PM – Lunch (Provided) \n\n\n\n1:30 PM – Introduction to the Northwestern REC Community Forest \n\n\n\n2:30 PM – Afternoon Breakout Session \n\n\n\n\n \n Introduction to Nature Watercolors (Rosalie Haizlett) – Limited Space \n \n \n \n\nIn this all-levels workshop\, we’ll go over the complete watercolor process\, from pencil sketch to final painting. SUMMARY:Forests: More Than Trees and Lumber @ Goodell Gardens & Homestead
DESCRIPTION:Goodell Gardens & Homestead is hosting FSF for a program on viewing forests as holistic ecosystems and exploring our connections to the many services they provide. Details are below. We hope to see you there! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor many of us\, when we walk in the forest\, we focus mostly on trees\, and societally\, we emphasize the importance of trees in providing lumber and wood products. \n\n\n\nYet forests are far more than trees and are much more than sources of commercial products. They provide life-giving ecological services and have long been sources of spiritual inspiration.  \n\n\n\nWe will explore ways in which we view forests\, assess why forests need to be seen as holistic ecosystems\, and examine our connections to the forests around us. \n\n\n\n** This program includes a walking tour of the Goodell Gardens & Homestead grounds\, please plan accordingly. ** \n\n\n\nThis program will be led by Richard Bowden and Kirk Johnson\, Foundation for Sustainable Forests Board Members. \n\n\n\nAdmission is on a donation basis. Please consider making a donation to Goodell Gardens & Homestead to help support this and similar programs.  \n\n\n\nPlease register online so that we can prepare for you: \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:A Walk in Penn's Woods
DESCRIPTION:As part of the statewide Walk in Penn’s Woods offerings\, FSF invites you to take a walk with us along the new Stony Hollow Trail in Grand Valley\, Warren County. \n\n\n\nDonated by the Slagter Family in 2022\, the Stony Hollow Trail is a 1.7 mile stretch of former railroad grade that has been converted to a trail for non-motorized recreation.
