We welcome author and historian Dr. Allen Dieterich-Ward for a keynote presentation on his book Cradle of Conservation: An Environmental History of Pennsylvania.  In addition to Allen’s engaging presentation\, the evening will feature a Chance Auction with great prizes! \n\n\n\nThis year’s dinner will be held at the Iroquois Club in Conneaut Lake\, PA. Please note\, the Club does not accept credit or debit cards. A cash-only bar will also be available. \n\n\n\nIf you experience an issue with online ordering\, please call FSF at 814-694-5830 or email info@foundationforsustainableforests.org \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKeynote Presentation by Dr. Allen Dieterich-Ward\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCradle of Conservation – The History of Pennsylvania’s Working LandscapesCradle of Conservation moves across time and place\, from the Haudenosaunee people of the Susquehanna Valley\, to the iron furnaces of nineteenth-century Pittsburgh\, to the diesel trucks on the twentieth-century Pennsylvania Turnpike. The book explores the histories of Pennsylvania’s river and coal regions and traces the environmental movements and crises that have led to public policy changes over the course of more than a century. The keynote presentation will focus on how Pennsylvanians have shaped and been shaped by their working landscapes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Allen Dieterich-Ward is an environmental and urban historian with a focus on political ecology and community development. He is a Professor of History and Director of The Graduate School at Shippensburg University.  His first book\, Beyond Rust: Metropolitan Pittsburgh and the Fate of Industrial America won the Arline Custer Memorial Award for Best Book on MidAtlantic History. His second book\, Cradle of Conservation: An Environmental History of Pennsylvania is now available from Temple University Press. He is the past president of the Pennsylvania Historical Association\, former editor of the Pennsylvania History Series\, and a board member of PA Humanities. SUMMARY:Loving the Land Through Working Forests - Forestry Walk
DESCRIPTION:Robert Crawford Memorial Forest\, near Edinboro\, PA \n\n\n\n\n\nThis year’s Loving the Land Through Working Forests event will scale back from its usual conference format and is offering a free guided walk at a 282-acre forest acquired by FSF earlier this year. \n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, September 19th\, FSF will host a forestry walk at our newly conserved Robert Crawford Memorial Forest near Edinboro in Erie County\, PA. Forester Guy Dunkle will lead us through a recent timber harvest\, providing information about tree selection\, forest pests\, and forest changes over time. We’ll also discuss the relationship between historical land use / past timber harvests and the conditions we see today. \n\n\n\nThe walk will include uneven terrain and mud; please dress accordingly. Bring a water bottle if you can\, but water bottles and snacks will be provided\, too. \n\n\n\nDriving directions are available below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Guy partners with industrial\, NGO\, and public and private forest landowners to create vibrant\, uneven-aged forests using a innovative silvicultural system of low-intensity\, high-frequency thinnings\, group selection openings\, and horse logging. Guy is a Forester for FSF and serves on the organization’s Board of Directors. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDriving Directions \n\n\n\nRobert Crawford Memorial Forest is located north of Edinboro\, PA on Old State Road.  If using a GPS\, please enter 3933 Old State Rd.\, Edinboro\, PA 16412 as the address. Event signs will be placed along Old State Rd. to guide you to parking areas. Additional parking details will be provided soon. \n\n\n\nFrom the North / McKean: Go south on PA-99 S / Edinboro Rd. / Main St. for 4.3 miles.  Turn left onto Oliver Rd. and travel 118 feet.  Turn right onto Old State Rd. and travel 1.5 miles to reach the property. \n\n\n\nFrom the East / Waterford: Go west on West 3rd St. for 0.5 miles.  West 3rd St. turns into Old State Rd.
