SUMMARY:2023 Loving the Land Through Working Forests
DESCRIPTION:September 16\, 2023 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n8am-4pm\, Blooming Valley\, PA \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis field conference is all about forests – threats\, management practices\, and ways that we can enhance their resilience and overall health. The day will be full of field-based presentations and walks on critical and emerging topics related to forest stewardship and conservation. From learning what “femelschlag” means\, to foraging for mushrooms\, to demonstrations of horse logging\, this will be an insightful program. Pre-registration is required and all are welcome! See below for the conference program\, with new information added regularly as speakers are confirmed! \n\n\n\nAttention Foresters – This conference qualifies for 8.5 Society of American Foresters CFE credits! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Registration for this event is no longer available. \n\n\n\nPlease contact us at (814) 694-5830 to inquire about attending. \n\n\n\nThank you for your interest! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n$10 – Members $25 – Non-Members Free for children under 7 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSchedule of Events \n\n\n\n8:00am          Registration Begins \n\n\n\n8:30am          Welcome Remarks & Introductions \n\n\n\n8:45am          Opening Address: \n\n\n\n\n \n Wildlands and Woodlands – Balancing Wood Production and Ecological Values in our Forests (Dr. Brian Donahue)\n \n \n \n\nDr. Brian Donahue will open the conference with a talk about New England’s Wildlands and Woodlands approach to conservation\, which seeks to balance wild reserves with sustainable management. Brian will also discuss his ongoing research into the current imbalance of wood product consumption vs. production in New England\, as well as his upcoming book about building a timber frame home with timber from his own woodlot. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n9:30am          Morning Breakout Session 1     \n\n\n\n\n \n Horse-Logging Demonstration with Discussion (Guy Dunkle)\n \n \n \n\nThe careful felling of trees and the use of horses to skid logs out of the woods are cornerstones of FSF’s sustainable forestry approach. Join Guy\, one of FSF’s land managers\, for a demonstration and discussion of this process and the nuances that help to minimize residual damage to the forest during a harvest. \n\n\n \n\n\n \n Tornadoes and Tinkering: 40 Years of Management in Blooming Valley Forest (Troy Firth)\n \n \n \n\nJust days after Troy Firth purchased Blooming Valley Forest\, the 1985 tornado outbreak swept through the region and left its mark on the property. Nearly 40 years later\, take a walk with Troy to explore the tornado’s lasting impact on the forest and learn how FSF mimics natural disturbances at Blooming Valley and its other properties to enhance forest health and resilience. \n\n\n \n\n\n \n Diverse Forests\, Diverse Birds: A 3-Year Update on the National Aviary Study (Dr. Steven Latta and Cassandra Ziegler)\n \n \n \n\nTake a walk through Blooming Valley Forest with Dr. Steven Latta\, Director of Conservation and Field Research at the National Aviary\, and Cassie Ziegler\, doctoral student and member of the National Aviary’s field research team. The team is wrapping up their third field season studying avian diversity\, habitat availability\, and food sources in FSF-managed forests. Dr. Latta and Cassie will share preliminary observations of the connection between FSF’s forest management and benefits to two groups of birds that ornithologists often think have habitat needs in conflict: species requiring early-successional habitat\, and species requiring large tracts of mature forest. How can that be? What resources are supporting them? Come join us! Please bring binoculars if available. \n\n\n \n\n\n \n Words from an Expert – Managing Invasive Species in Your Woods (Ellery Troyer)\n \n \n \n\nAre you or a friend facing invasive species in your forest and wondering what you can do? Ellery Troyer\, President of Ecological Field Services\, will lead a walk in the woods to discuss practices and a timeline for managing invasive plant species that interfere with native understory plant and native tree regeneration. Whether you are trying to nip a future problem in the bud or restore an infested forest\, this session will provide management tips to keep invasives at bay. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n10:45am         Break \n\n\n\n11:00am         Morning Breakout Session 2 \n\n\n\n\n \n Horse-Logging Demonstration with Discussion (Pat Maloney)\n \n \n \n\nThe careful felling of trees and the use of horses to skid logs out of the woods are cornerstones of FSF’s sustainable forestry approach. Join Pat\, one of FSF’s Directors and former horse logger\, for a demonstration and discussion of this process and the nuances that help to minimize residual damage to the forest during a harvest. \n\n\n \n\n\n \n Food from the Forest: Beginner Mushroom Walk and Identification (Emily Wojtyna)\n \n \n \n\nHave you ever spotted a beautiful mushroom in the forest and wondered\, “Can I eat that?” Join Emily Wojtyna\, author of The Amateur Forager’s Cookbook: Featuring Edible Wild Mushrooms of Western Pennsylvania\, for a beginner’s mushroom hike through FSF’s Blooming Valley Forest. Emily will discuss the basics of wild mushroom foraging and bring resources to help you become familiar with mushroom identification so you can be safe and have fun as you begin to explore the wonderful world of fungi. \n\n\n \n\n\n \n Words from an Expert – Managing Invasive Species in Your Woods (Ellery Troyer)\n \n \n \n\nAre you or a friend facing invasive species in your forest and wondering what you can do? SUMMARY:Jim Finley Stewardship Day
DESCRIPTION:To honor the memory of distinguished forest educator and visionary conservationist James C. Finley\, the Foundation for Sustainable Forests is introducing a new annual event\, the Jim Finley Stewardship Day. \n\n\n\nEach year\, we will come together at an FSF-conserved property for a project that is tied to the long-term health and resilience of the forest. \n\n\n\nThis year’s work will take place at Moxie Woods near Greenville\, Mercer County\, PA. FSF is in the midst of conducting significant understory management there to address the presence of invasive plant species. With your help\, we will enhance these efforts by cleaning up an old farmstead site at Moxie Woods. \n\n\n\nFSF will supply the necessary tools and supplies to get the job done\, but you are also encouraged to bring your own tools\, work gloves\, etc. Dress for the weather\, but also for brambles\, muddy terrain\, etc. \n\n\n\nLunch\, beverages\, and snacks will be provided. There will be a bathroom facility on site. We will request that you RSVP for this event\, so that we can plan the projects and tools according to the group size. Tamarack Wildlife Center’s forest-dwelling ambassador birds will be in attendance\, giving you an opportunity to discover their personalities\, woodland habitat adaptations\, and rehabilitation stories. Tamarack Wildlife Center\, located in Saegertown\, PA\, has twin missions to rehabilitate injured\, sick\, and orphaned wildlife in order to return them to the wild and to provide education for all ages promoting appreciation and understanding of wildlife. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKeynote Presentation: Steven Latta\, PhD\n\n\n\nDirector of Conservation & Field Research\, National Aviary\n\n\n\n“Using Forestry to Increase Bird Diversity for Conservation”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Steven Latta\, the Director of Conservation and Field Research at the National Aviary\, is working in FSF’s woodlands to understand the impacts of our uneven-age forest structure on songbirds. Now in year two of the three-year project\, his presentation will summarize the work to date and share preliminary observations of how FSF’s forestry affects forest bird diversity and nesting habitat. \n\n\n\nFor more than 25 years\, Dr. Latta has worked in the Caribbean islands and Latin America where his research has focused on the winter ecology of migratory birds\, and understanding how migrant and resident species respond to natural and anthropogenic changes to their habitat. His other research includes documenting the survival of Ivory-billed Woodpeckers in Louisiana.A native of Michigan\, Dr. Latta was educated at Kalamazoo College (B.A.)\, University of Michigan (M.S.)\, and University of Missouri-Columbia (Ph.D. in Avian Ecology). After graduating in 2000\, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Missouri-St. Louis where he studied with Dr. Robert Ricklefs the evolution and diversification of avian malaria across Caribbean islands. He then served for four years as the Director of the Latin American Program at Point Reyes Bird Observatory in California\, where he developed long-term monitoring programs in many countries\, and trained hundreds of locally-based biologists and naturalists in standardized bird monitoring techniques. Dr. Latta joined the National Aviary team in 2006.  \n\n\n\nDr. Latta has worked in the Caribbean islands and Latin America for more than 25 years where his research has focused on the winter ecology of migratory birds\, and understanding how migrant and resident species respond to natural and anthropogenic changes to their habitat. His other work has focused on the ecology and conservation of threatened endemics\, bird use of riparian areas\, the value of early-successional and agricultural habitats for birds\, and population dynamics in high Andean habitats in Ecuador. \n\n\n\nDr. Latta’s current research uses the Louisiana Waterthrush as a model species to study population dynamics and carry-over effects on both the temperate breeding and Neotropical overwintering grounds. He is also evaluating how the degradation of streams leads to population reductions in this riparian-obligate species\, with results helping to understand the environmental consequences of important water quality management issues including acid precipitation control\, acid mine drainage\, and the use of hydraulic fracturing to access natural gas deposits. Dr. Latta’s research also includes documenting the survival of Ivory-billed Woodpeckers in Louisiana. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Registration for this event is no longer available. \n\n\n\nPlease contact us at (814) 694-5830 to inquire about attending. SUMMARY:Loving the Land Through Working Forests
DESCRIPTION:The next Loving the Land Through Working Forests Conference is in September 2023! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA field conference all about forests – threats\, management practices\, and ways that we can enhance their resilience and overall health. The day will include presentations\, woods walks\, and live demonstrations of horse-logging and goats browsing invasive plants. There will be children’s programming\, and lunch is provided for all. Pre-registration is required. See below for the full program! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegistration has closed – stay tuned for the 2023 lineup! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n$10 – Members – $25 – Non-Members – Free for children under 7 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor Mail-In Registration and payment by check\, download the registration flier here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSchedule of Events \n\n\n\n7:30am          Registration Begins \n\n\n\n8:15am          Welcome Remarks & Introductions \n\n\n\n8:30am          Opening Address by Susan Stout New Presenter: Bob Long \n\n\n\n\n \n Carefully Observing our Forests Together in Changing Times\n \n \n \n\nRobert Long\, USDA Forest Service Researcher Emeritus\, will talk about some subtle changes that scientists and managers have noticed in nearby forests. The observations are stronger because they’ve been discussed in forestry communities — managers and scientists primarily so far. She will talk about ways that landowners can work with their foresters to strengthen this web of observations\, and be part of developing adaptive management strategies to sustain our forests through these changing times. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n 9:00am          Morning Breakout Session 1     \n\n\n\n\n \n Removing invasive plants in a friendly and natural way- with goats! (Allegheny Goatscape)\n \n \n \n\nJoin the nonprofit organization Allegheny Goatscape for a discussion and demonstration on the use of goats as part of an integrated approach to mitigating the presence of invasive plants in your woods\, and shifting the balance in the forest floor back in favor of native plants! \n\n\n \n\n\n \n Woods Walk on Invasive Species & Their Management (Troy Firth)\n \n \n \n\nTroy Firth will lead a walk through Thompsons’ Wood\, and discuss practices and a timeline for managing invasive plant species that interfere with native understory plant and native tree regeneration. Thompsons’ Wood is a work in progress- a perfect backdrop to discuss invasive plant identification\, and management tips for invasives\, one ‘spoke in the wheel’ that is the FSF’s integrated management approach to sustainable forestry. \n\n\n \n\n\n \n Diverse Forests\, Diverse Birds (Dr. Steven Latta)\n \n \n \n\nCome for a walk through the forest with Dr. Steven Latta\, Director of Conservation and Field Research at the National Aviary. We are currently documenting avian diversity in FSF-managed forests. We’re particularly interested in whether forest management as practiced by FSF actually benefits two groups of birds that ornithologists often think have habitat needs in conflict: species requiring early-successional habitat\, and species requiring large tracts of mature forest. How can that be? Come join us! Please bring binoculars if available. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n10:20am         Break \n\n\n\n10:40am         Morning Breakout Session 2 \n\n\n\n\n \n Horse-Logging Demonstration with Discussion (Guy Dunkle)\n \n \n \n\nAs the FSF’s Land Manager\, Guy Dunkle oversees the horse crews that skid logs from FSF forests. Join Guy for a discussion of this process and the nuances that help to minimize damage to the forest during a harvest. \n\n\n \n\n\n \n Tales from the Tailgate: A Woman’s Guide to Working in your Woods (Nancy Baker)\n \n \n \n\nThe right tool can make almost any task easier\, it not pleasant\, and the completion of that task with great results can make one really proud and pleased.  Women need to acquaint themselves with tools for forest tasks; our strengths are just not well arranged to accomplish things by force.  So if you’d love to work in your woods but you’re not sure whether it would be a pleasant task\, join us to look at how you can outfit yourself for a safe and comfortable day with rewarding results. \n\n\n \n\n\n \n Removing invasive plants in a friendly and natural way- with goats! Oaks are superior landscape trees throughout most of the U.S. because of their many ecological and aesthetic attributes. Using activity on the oaks in his yard each month of the year as examples\, Tallamy will compare oak species to other popular shade trees in terms of their ability to support animal diversity\, protect watersheds\, and sequester carbon dioxide.  Learning that oaks provide life support to thousands of species may motivate us to return more of these essential trees to our built landscapes.    \n\n\n \n\n\n\n2:30pm            Afternoon Breakout Session \n\n\n\n\n \n Tales from the Tailgate: A Woman’s Guide to Working in your Woods (Nancy Baker)\n \n \n \n\nThe right tool can make almost any task easier\, it not pleasant\, and the completion of that task with great results can make one really proud and pleased. Gavin started to dream of working with goats to eat knotweed and other invasives when a good friend presented the idea of roaming Pittsburgh’s North Side with a small nomadic herd eating overgrown vacant lots\, more than ten years ago. When he worked on a project to bring the goats to a public space that had immediate positive effects on the landscape\, he knew he had to get more involved. A few years later\, he created Allegheny GoatScape as a 501(c)(3) non-profit to be able to use these gentle animals and work with partners\, mitigating invasive plants throughout Allegheny County in an eco-friendly way. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Nancy Baker\n \n \n \n\nNancy Baker owns and manages 163 Northern Pennsylvania acres from which her great-grandfather cut the original timber in the 1860s. With a graduate degree in Forest Ecology\, she works as a writer\, editor and communicator with an allegiance to both the forest and the forest’s landowners\, contributing to numerous publications\, editing the quarterly magazine Pennsylvania Forests\, and co-chairing the communications committee of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association. She is a staunch advocate for Pennsylvania’s Women and Their Woods program\, helping women learn the skills needed to make informed decisions about their woodlands\, and showcasing the challenges and opportunities which shape women’s passion and commitment to the land. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Guy Dunkle\n \n \n \n\nGuy Dunkle is a Land Manager and Director with the Foundation for Sustainable Forests\, with over 15 years of experience practicing sustainable forestry across northwest PA and western NY. Guy manages the FSF’s horse crews and will discuss the nuances of the job when horses are used to skid logs in a forest. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Troy Firth\n \n \n \n\nTroy Firth is the Founder and President of the Foundation for Sustainable Forests\, with over 45 years of experience practicing sustainable forestry and production of maple syrup. Troy is the recipient of the 2019 WeConservePA (formerly Pennsylvania Land Trust Association) Lifetime Conservation Achievement Award and the Pennsylvania Environmental Council’s Western Pennsylvania Environmental Award. Join Troy on a walk through Thompsons’ Wood as he discusses invasive species management and the important role it plays in the FSF’s integrated approach to sustainable forest management. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Steven Latta\, PhD\n \n \n \n\nDr. Steven Latta is the Director of Conservation and Field Research at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. A native of Michigan\, he was educated at Kalamazoo College (B.A.)\, University of Michigan (M.S.)\, and University of Missouri-Columbia (Ph.D. in Avian Ecology). \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Susan Stout\, PhD\n \n \n \n\nSusan Stout\, PhD is a Research Forester Emerita\, US Forest Service Northern Research Station\, having served there for almost 40 years. She has a distinguished career as a silviculturalist\, and has also worked to further Diversity & Inclusion in the field of Natural Resources. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Doug Tallamy\, PhD\n \n \n \n\nDoug Tallamy\, PhD is a professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware\, where he has authored 88 research publications and has taught Insect Taxonomy\, Behavioral Ecology\, Humans and Nature\, Insect Ecology\, and other courses for 36 years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. His book Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens was published by Timber Press in 2007 and was awarded the 2008 Silver Medal by the Garden Writers’ Association. The Living Landscape\, co-authored with Rick Darke\, was published in 2014. Among his awards are the Garden Club of America Margaret Douglas Medal for Conservation and the Tom Dodd\, Jr. Award of Excellence. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you to our Sponsors
