A Walk in Penn’s Woods AND a walk back in time at Sparta Sportsmen’s Community Forest
October 6, 2025Last weekend, we hosted our Annual Dinner and Loving the Land Through Working Forests Conference. The sessions and keynotes were a celebration of forest stewards and the need to conserve and thoughtfully manage healthy, intact forest ecosystems. We are so thankful to all of our presenters, volunteers, attendees, and sponsors for making this memorable weekend possible!
The Dinner keynote, “How to Love a Forest”, was delivered by forester, author, and content creator Ethan Tapper. The conference program included the following sessions:
- Woods walk: 50 years of ecological forestry at McLaughlin Run Forest, by FSF Founder and President Troy Firth
- Aldo Leopold’s Enduring Legacy, by Lance Irving, Sand County Foundation
- Stream health and forest management, by Mark Kirk, Watershed Conservation Research Center at Allegheny College
- Horse-logging demonstration by FSF’s Pat Maloney, David Byler, and Lester Byler
- Forest Resilience – What it is and how to foster it in your stand, Susan Stout, retired USDA Forest Service Scientist
- Forest Legacy Planning, by Thomas C. Hoffman, II, Knox Law
