October 5, 2025 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
As part of the statewide Walk in Penn’s Woods offerings, FSF invites you to take a walk with us at FSF’s new Sparta Sportsmen’s Community Forest in Spartansburg, PA.
Sparta Sportsmen’s Community Forest features an exceptional stand of sugar maple that has served as a sugar bush for several decades. Over a quarter mile of headwater tributaries flow through the property before joining nearby Patrick Run in the East Branch Oil Creek watershed.
In 2024, the forest was purchased from Sparta Sportsmen’s Club, which had owned the property since the early 1960s. The project was made possible by the PA DCNR Community Conservation Partnership Program via the Keystone Fund, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Commissioners of Crawford County, Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds, Crawford Heritage Community Foundation, and Crawford County Sportsmen’s Council. Troy Firth, FSF Founder and President, donated additional forestland in Crawford and Venango Counties for conservation purposes in support of this project.
The property features an access drive that that we will walk as an approx. one mile loop trail. The walk will be on relatively flat, but occasionally uneven, terrain. Please dress for the weather, brambles, and possibly soggy ground. Blaze orange clothing is recommended as the property is open to the public for hunting. Bring a water bottle if you can, but water bottles and snacks will be provided, too.
We will meet at the driveway off of Old Route 77. See the Google Maps link below for directions.
