News release from our friends at the Northwest PA Woodland Association

NWPWA Presents: Inventorying Your Woodland

The Northwest Pennsylvania Woodland Association (NWPWA) is hosting an educational program on how to inventory the trees in a forest.  The program will be held at the Kosmach woodland in Springboro, PA on June 15, 2024.  Regional DCNR Foresters will open the program with a presentation on why and how to inventory your trees.  Then we’ll head out into the woods with the Foresters and experienced woodland owners to practice what we’ve learned.  Even if you’re not planning a sale, a forest inventory is useful for developing priorities for woodland improvements.

Bill Benedict, President of the NWPWA, explained that “The program is a follow-up to our March seminar on selling timber the smart way.  Knowing what trees you have is critical not only to a successful timber sale, but to properly develop and manage a resilient forest.  Some participants may use their inventory to identify opportunities to make their property healthier, more productive, and more attractive.  Some may use their inventory to identify what trees to plant or retain, not cut.  Others may use it to improve wildlife habitat.”  The NWPWA is holding the program at a woodland that is fairly remote on the border of Erie and Crawford Counties, near the PA/OH border.  Bring your boots and your bug spray and expect to drive down a few narrow dirt roads to get there.

The program is scheduled to run from 8:00am until 11:00am on Saturday, June 15th across the road from 1194 Joiner Road, Springboro, PA.  All are welcome.  Admission is free.  Get there early so you don’t miss the “how-to” explanations and the free refreshments.  There will be plenty of time to ask questions of the foresters and the woodland owners during the program.  For more information, email [email protected] or phone Bill Benedict at 814-881-4779.
